Ms Diane Lachapelle

Diane
Lachapelle hails from Montreal. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree (with
a major in dental hygiene) from the Faculty of Dental Medicine at
Université de Montréal in 1974 and a Master's Degree
in Dietetics from Université Laval in 1980. She also took a
training session on Managerial Skills for Women Executives at the
École des hautes etudes commerciales in 1992.
Diane Lachapelle began her career at
Université Laval in 1975, where she lectured on preventive
dentistry, nutrition, and community health from 1975 to 1984. She
became an assistant professor in 1984, associate professor in 1986,
and full professor in 1991. During all these years, she devoted most
of her time to teaching and research activities and obtained a number
of major grants, alone and in collaboration with other researchers.
The most recent was a four-year grant (1997-2000) from the Ministère
de la Santé et des Services sociaux awarded to her and four
colleagues to study Psychosocial Factors Influencing the Dental Health
of Children. Ms Lachapelle also co-authored over thirty scientific
articles with professors from the Faculty of Dental Medicine and other
faculties at Université Laval, in addition to making presentations
in the field of dentistry on a regular basis at international conferences
and seminars.
Diane Lachapelle has occupied a number
of administrative positions at the Faculty of Dental Medicine. She
was Faculty Secretary from 1992 to 1995, Vice Dean (Undergraduate
Studies) and acting Dean in 1995, and Dean from 1996 to 2002. During
her years at the helm, the Faculty of Dental Medicine created the
Master of Dental Sciences Program, the Periodontics Speciality Program,
and the Gerodontology Program. All these programs were accredited
by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. In addition,
research activities were developed within the faculty to meet the
requirements of these newly created graduate study programs.
During her career, Ms. Lachapelle also
took on numerous commitments, both on and off campus. At the university,
in addition to sitting on faculty committees, she was the Deans' Representative
on the Board of Directors of the Université Laval Alumni Association
(1998-2002) and sat on the SPUL/UL Parity Committee for Equal Employment
for Women (1998-2002), the committee for nominating members to the
Governing Council and University Council (1997-2002), the Steering
Committee for the Claire-Bonenfant Research Chair (1996-1998), the
University Council (May 1995-2002), and the Rector's Nomination Committee
for Merit Scholarships and Awards for Excellence (1995-2002).
Off campus, Diane Lachapelle sat on the Board of Directors and Administrative
Committee of the Centre hospitalier universitaire du Québec
(CHUQ) from 1996 to 1999. She currently sits on the Board of Directors
of the Centre hospitalier affilié de Québec (CHA) and
the Board of Directors of Centraide (United Way) Quebec. She also
chaired the CHUQ Committee on the Quality of Health Services (1996-1999)
and the Advisory Committee on the Development of Clinical Practice
Standards for Dental Hygienists at Health and Welfare Canada (1985-1991).
Ms Lachapelle received the Award of Merit from the Québec Interprofessional
Council in 1998. In 2004, she received the title of Honorary Member
of the Académie dentaire du Québec in recognition of
her outstanding contributions to the profession.
Diane Lachapelle was appointed Vice
Rector (Development and International Relations) on December 11, 2002.
